“China” is a word that (in English) designates both a country and its ceramics. These products were a critical starting point for the world to understand Chinese culture.
This exhibition by Valencia’s Museum of Ceramics focuses on a “living tradition”. It shows how contemporary ceramics transmit their ancient wisdom —accumulated during a long history of technological development—, and respond to a complex society in an easy and carefree way. Therefore, it shows multiple realistic relationships between production and consumption, work and life, skills and inheritance.
As we see in the documentary Shifu, two skilled artisans, the brothers Zeng Li and Zeng Peng, immersed in the great industrial era of China, are still able to treat the bustling reality with simplicity and elegance. Their works convey the smell of the soil and the energy of nature. Traditional art and crafts, improved by artists voluntarily, become the avant-garde instrument against the ups and downs of times.
The exhibition is a sincere tribute to the deep spirit of traditions. Coorganized by the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and the National Museum of Ceramics. Sponsor: China National Arts Fund.
Schedule: From March 6 to May 5, 2019 (Presentation to the media: Tuesday, March 5 at 1 pm; inauguration: Tuesday, March 5 at 7 pm).
